Memorial Şişli Hospital IVF and Genetics Center welcomes embryologists and gynecologists from Turkey and abroad

Memorial Şişli Hospital IVF and Genetics Center continues its theoretical and practical training program for the last 12 years as one of the official training centers selected by the Turkish Ministry of Health for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). Within this program, gynecologists and embryologists are trained for six months on the curriculum specified by the Turkish Ministry of Health. In order to be nominated as a training center, first, it is necessary to have a certain number of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles per year. Second, instructors in the training center, either gynecologists or embryologists, should have academic titles. Third, the success of the center has to be proven by statistical data sent to the Ministry. Memorial Şişli Hospital IVF and Genetics Center, which has the highest number of treatments in a single center with 4800 IVF cycles per year, provides training every six months for ART with a total of five specialists and embryologists.

The Director of Memorial Şişli Hospital IVF Center Professor Semra Kahraman, MD, states that so far, 92 physicians and 30 biologists, including a total of 122 scientists have been trained in these courses, and have been entitled to receive the IVF certificate by the Turkish Ministry of Health. She also pointed out that: “Certificate holders are considered to be able to manage an IVF Center on their own and to gain basic knowledge and practical skills that can be applied and pursued to relevant scientific areas. Most of our certificated trainees are doing successful work in many centers around the country today."

Worldwide Training is being provided as well

For the last ten years, specialists from 31 different countries attended and received training at the “Workshop on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) of Genetic and Chromosomal Disorders” which is jointly held by the Memorial Şişli Hospital and the Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis International Society (PGDIS). In these courses, 184 participants have been trained in reproductive genetic diagnostic methods. Many of these trainees have implemented for first time PGD back in their own countries. Among the instructors of this workshop are PGDIS Director Prof. Anver Kuliev, MD, from the USA and Prof. Don Leigh, PhD from Australia. Many participants from our country are also trained in this course, which is limited to 15 embryologists/ geneticists from all over the world each year, thus creating a long waiting list for participation. This workshop is held each year at the Memorial Şişli Hospital IVF and Genetics Center following the annual World Congress of PGDIS.
